Still on the road with the Freedom Convoy 2022…
CBC Interviews Canadian Minister of Transport
CBC: Should the Government be More Flexible With the Truckers?
Transport Minister Omar Alghabra:
“We have all recognized that COVID-19 has had the biggest impact on our supply chain. Over the last year and a half we have seen destruction in our supply chains caused by COVID either because of lock downs (or) because of labour absenteeism, Our plan all along is to defeat COVID and end the pandemic as quickly as possible.”
CBC: Would you consider alternatives?
Alghabra: There are long standing challenges to supply chains but one of them is making sure that the workers in the sector are safe and vaccinated…We also put a similar mandate to the transportation sector for air, rail and marine…I want to emphasize that we’ve given truck drivers a long leeway…And they have stepped up. They have been there for Canadians…90% of truck drivers have been vaccinated.
That’s why we think now is the right time, if we really want to address the root cause of the supply chain issue is to make sure that everybody within the supply chain network is vaccinated.
CBC: How many cases have been detected in truck drivers crossing the border?
In the past we made an exemption for truck drivers for being tested, however truck drivers are just like the rest of the population.Transport Minister Omar Alghabra
“It’s based on science…(and) data that applies to the population.”
Question: Which population?
Western Standard, October 2021:
“Two-thirds of federal civil service will be exempt from mandatory vaccinations”
“Exempted employees include call centre operators, federal judges, meat inspectors, park wardens, postal workers, tax auditors, Commons and Senate staff, soldiers, sailors and air crew and members of the public entering federal buildings.”

CBC: Travel accounts for less than 1% of cases…It (truck driving) is a solitary endeavour. Why is it necessary?
Alghabra: A lot of people believe the biggest disruption to our supply chains is COVID…All experts agree that the best way to deal with COVID is through vaccination.
Many, many experts actually disagree.
